Before his brief stint with Nine's new Reunion movement, the Victorian optician Nowell traveled across Terra in search of someone, making a living with his optician skills. After the Londinium incident, Nowell was reunited with a former customer who introduced him to Rhodes Island.
Imaging tests reveal clear, normal outlines of internal organs, and no abnormal shadows have been detected. Originium granules have not been detected in the circulatory system and there is no sign of infection. At this time, this operator is believed to be uninfected.

Operator Nowell shows no signs of Originium infection.

[Blood Originium-Crystal Density] 0.08u/L
Operator Nowell scored full marks on Medical's standard Oripathy prevention quiz, and demonstrates a degree of understanding of applied Arts theory. His cautious and logical approach towards knowledge is also to be commended.

'He can take over the Introduction to Oripathy seminar for new operators as far as I'm concerned.'
—Warfarin
Operator Nowell was born in Victoria, though he does not remember exactly where. Based on his Gaulish accent, we speculate that it was somewhere in the northern regions.

Remarks:
This is merely a hypothesis, and has not been verified.
Remarks on remarks:
Forget the hypotheses and standard practice for background checks. Would anyone still use those brass glasses things with gradation marks he's got in his box? The only other place you'd find something like that is in a museum.
...That doesn't mean he's lying! No optician has used the Gaulish style ever since the fall of Lingones and the sacking of the Imperial Academy of Sciences. Besides, the Royal Victorian Academy of Sciences soon established new regulations that defined optometrists and opticians as separate professions. No matter where he was born, someone who mixes up the two definitely does NOT have an optometrist's license!

[Internal Medical Department Memo]
After discussions with Operator Nowell concerning his lack of an optometrist's license, we have arrived at the following solution:
1. Operator Nowell will go through training and receive formal education on modern optometry and lens fitting theory.
2. Operator Nowell will undergo formal optometry accreditation, pursuant to his progress in training.
3. Until he obtains optometrist accreditation, Operator Nowell will no longer conduct eye examinations, and focus solely on fitting and dispensing.

'I would say that Mr. Nowell is not so much an optometrist or optician as a craftsman. Even after learning how to use more convenient instruments, he still prefers to make the lenses and frames by hand.
'It may take more time, but every pair of glasses he makes is unique. The other patients say they envy my sister for the poem he engraved on her glasses frame: 'Under the blue sky the river flows / And by its banks sway the willows.' It's about what a bedridden child sees after walking out of the door for the first time in a long time.
—Family member of a patient
Nowell was the first client who came to seek my assistance at the Londinium office after the war, not for himself, but for the child he was accompanying.
I was surprised to find him looking exactly the same as he did thirty years ago, when he passed through my village and made me a pair of glasses. I was around the same age as the child at the time. He didn't recognize me, and I didn't say anything. He was anxious at the boy's stubborn refusal to cooperate with medical personnel, but never lost his patience, just like how he listened to a farmer's child thirty years ago, before producing a pair of glasses like a magician and saying that he would collect payment once I graduated from university. Does he still remember those few pounds he has yet to collect?
We proceeded with the registration process. Nowell had brought the boy here at the request of his parents—whom he had assisted during the evacuation—in order to examine him for Oripathy. The boy had calmed down by then, and Nowell knelt down to speak to him in a low and serious tone. From what he said, I gathered that he understood quite well the tragedy that had occurred here in Londinium.
He was unsurprised by the results of the examination.
The child had finally stopped struggling and sat on the stool. As I was drawing his blood, I kept waiting for the words to come out of Nowell's mouth.
But he did not ask the question, even when all the tests had concluded. Had he stopped searching for that certain someone? The invisible shadow behind history, whose identity no one in town knew? Were they ever even a real person?
He never asked, so I could only guess. Perhaps he had already found them, or perhaps he had simply stopped obsessing over it. Regardless of the reason, he was there, standing, waiting in silence... As though he finally had unlimited time to spend at his leisure, without having to hurry to the next village, asking the question few knew the answer to.

[Addendum]
Operator Nowell entered Londinium and assisted the Self-Salvation Corps in evacuating the survivors. Reports about his agelessness and his search for the 'Unicorn' are to be archived with no immediate action at this time.
Expenses incurred by Operator Price of the Londinium office in purchasing corrective lenses have been reimbursed by the Medical Department as an employment benefit.
—HR Department Archive
Mr. Miltner admitted he had low expectations when he first reached out to Rhodes Island, particularly as we had already turned down several visitation requests for various reasons.
He did not give up, however, attributing the previous failures to bad timing, such as the landship being too far away, or the subject of his visit being away from the ship at the time. Far from being frustrated, he continued to submit his requests to meet with Operator Nowell.
When his eighth request finally went through, the rest of the process went surprisingly smoothly. Even though Norwell claimed not to know any middle-aged men by the name of Georgia Miltner, and showed clear reluctance regarding this 'family visit', and even though Mr. Miltner himself admitted having doubts about whether this Nowell of Rhodes Island was really the one he was looking for... the meeting came to pass, at long last.

[Audio Log]
'I've lost track of how many leads came out empty. Middle-aged Vulpo optician by the name of Nowell... there were three who fit all the criteria, in Victoria alone.
'But none were the one Grandma Madeline was looking for. None were... my great-grandfather.
'My father had already passed away, but I'd always hoped to tell Grandma Madeline that I found Great-Grandpa Nowell, while she could still see and hear.
'Do you know, she isn't even that concerned with being able to see him one last time. She just wanted to ask him a question, and hear the answer.
'That was the one thought keeping her going for a century. To me, she's always been a healthy, happy, and well-to-do old woman, which made me even more curious about this Great-Grandpa Nowell.
'And at long last, I'll get to see him with my own two eyes.
'I hope it's really him.'

After the meeting, Operator Nowell escorted Mr. Miltner all the way outside the ship. They bid each other farewell with a smile.
It seems Mr. Miltner had finally found his man.

[Addendum]
'Have you found peace?'
'I will. Someday.'
'Then...
'That's all Grandma Madeline wanted to ask, and all I need to know.'
'The words I say often feel like they're coming out of somebody else's mouth.
'It's like a distorted voice coming from a telephone left on a table, asking if there's someone on the other end. That's the feeling some of the voices in the dream give me, a feeling that extends to reality, making it difficult to distinguish them.'
'Sounds like something out of a movie.'
'...I haven't watched many movies. I'm just describing what it feels like.'
'Sorry. The words just came out of my mouth...'
'It's alright. Do you like movies?'
'They briefly immerse me in somebody else's life and story, because my own is so easily forgotten against my will.'
'...I'm sorry.'
'It's okay, sir.'
'...Here, the coated non-corrective glasses you wanted. The lightweight frame should make them easy to wear for long periods. I suppose this is what young people want these days?'
'Wow, they're so light! Thank you.'
'Then I'll take my leave—'
'Do you want to come to this Friday's movie screening, Nowell?'
'What?'
'It's where we all get together watch a movie and talk about it.'
'Even if I won't have much to say?'
'But you described the voices in your dream so beautifully. We're showing an Ursine children's movie this week, and there'll be a lot of young operators there.'
'...Very well. Let me know the time and place.'

Dear Doctor,
I am currently on a field mission. This letter is not urgent, and you may read it in your spare time.
As we returned to our vehicles, one of the other operators picked up a few white hairs from my shoulder. After I put them away, I heard that sound like joints creaking in my ear again, which I'd heard while boarding the vehicle.
It made me start searching for signs, tracing it back to my increasingly frequent dreams. Fragments of memory float to the surface even during the day, making it difficult to make up for the restless nights with a nap.
In my dreams, I sit in a workshop by the Lingones River, or walk through the marshes in southern Victoria. I see flashbacks of all my journeys across Terra. There is only one thing that I am sure of, no matter how blurred the fragments are: my heart is at peace. I am waiting.
But what am I waiting for? What CAN I wait for?
Perhaps I have saved enough lives. I have tasted happiness. Perhaps this ember will be scattered to the winds. Perhaps...
Perhaps that day is near.
If so, I ask for your blessings, friend.

There is no need to reply or hold on to this letter. Do with it as you please.
I will see you soon if all goes well with the mission. Take care.

You came to little Connie's baby shower a few years ago, right? But Grandma didn't move to Connor County, so it was only last year, after I got that stack of letters that had been piling up during the war that I heard the news.
Yes, it really was... unexpected. The baby, bawling her head off, suddenly opening her eyes wide and flailing her limbs, which got everyone staring at an optician randomly strolling past the garden. Now that I think about it, pretty much anyone would've thought it was some kind of sick joke. Grandpa's great-grandpa, still alive and untouched by time, suddenly reappearing after decades of silence... Ridiculous, really.
There are a lot of strange things out there, so we should've realized your circumstances weren't quite so odd, all things considered.
But you're not here out of curiosity for the family freak, are you?
No, of course not... Great-Grandpa Nowell.
Just Nowell is fine. We're here to chat. No need to get tangled up in formalities.
    Mister Nowell.
...Sure. You said you were Madeline's grandson?
That's right, my dad was Grandma Madeline's youngest.
Madeline is also my youngest child... The last time I saw her, your father had just been born. He never met me, and you hadn't either. If it wasn't curiosity that had you so insistent on finding a man you've never met, then what?
Visiting family. Just like I wrote on the form. No more, no less.
    (Silence, punctuated by breathing)
Dad wasn't as lucky as I was.
When Grandma became the talk of the town over her insistence on searching for you, to the point that she and Grandpa split, Dad took over in her stead. He was always setting out, then coming back empty-handed. All my memories of him are just his back, coming and going out of the door at the end of the hall. I grew up, Dad got old, and on his sickbed, I vowed to both him and Grandma that I would find you.
...What if you got the wrong man again?
Well, I'm not so sure my kids would want to take over once my legs give out, but I'll tell them the same stories Grandma told me, and let them make their own choice. But I didn't get the wrong man, did I?
    You're just like Madeline.
*sigh* You mean my face? Dad said so too, but it's my granddaughter who's a spitting image of her. You don't know what name Grandma Madeline chose for her, do you?
And what name would that be?
Nowell. She's called Nowell. A Gaulish name... and yours, too. Apparently, while tidying up some letters, she found one where you said it was a girl's name in Gaul, so Great-Grandma started calling you it as a joke in the reply—
    (Hurried breathing)
    (Sound of hands rubbing together)
    A-Are you alright, Mister Nowell?
No... No, I've... I've got nothing to do with those letters...
I brought them along. Here. There's a family photo too, along with a letter Dad wrote to you before he passed. I figured you'd want to see.
    I...
You've never stopped caring, have you?
